Winter Maternity Photography in Richmond Park: A Calm Beginning to Baby’s Story
Pregnancy is full of those big headline moments - scans, kicks, due dates - but it’s often the quieter, in-between ones that stay with you. A hand resting on a growing bump. A shared smile. The hush before life changes forever.
That’s what I’m drawn to when I photograph maternity photography, especially when it’s followed by a newborn session. It’s not just about creating flattering images - it’s about capturing the beginning of a story.
Why Choose a Winter Maternity Session in Richmond Park?
For this family, their journey began in Richmond Park, one of the most beautiful settings in London for maternity photography. In winter, the park feels slow and spacious, with soft light and muted colours that make everything feel calm and timeless.
Richmond Park also grows with families. Today it’s a bump and a brisk walk. Months later, it might be a pram and a coffee. Next year, a toddler running through the ferns. Choosing a location that will become part of your family’s routine adds a quiet emotional layer to the photos that deepens with time.
Why Book Both Maternity and Newborn Photography?
Many expecting parents choose to document both chapters - the anticipation, and the arrival. Together they preserve a fuller, more meaningful story.
Booking both sessions in advance also takes one decision off your plate later. When you’re navigating nappies, feeding, sleep, visitors, and very little rest, you won’t be searching for a newborn photographer. You’ll know exactly who is arriving and how the session will feel.
As a thank you, I offer a bump-to-baby package that includes:
• no session fee for one of your sessions (a £200 saving)
• 10% off your chosen digital or print collections

When to Book Your Maternity Photoshoot
Maternity sessions usually take place between 28–34 weeks, when your bump is beautifully visible but you’re still comfortable moving around. If your due date falls in winter, don’t feel you have to wait for summer - London’s softer winter light is incredibly flattering outdoors, and the colours are surprisingly beautiful.
For parents who prefer to stay indoors, I also create sessions at home, especially if you love the idea of documenting everyday tenderness in your own space. I’ve written more about that here:
→ Creating Intimate Maternity Sessions at Your London Home
What to Wear for Your Winter Maternity Session
Flowing dresses in neutral or earthy tones photograph beautifully against winter landscapes. The mum in this session chose deep navy, which worked perfectly against soft greenery and muted winter tones in Richmond Park.
Partners are always welcome too. These aren’t just photos of a bump - they’re the final portraits before you become three (or more).
f you’d like some guidance on clothing, my welcome guide includes simple tips on what to wear for the whole family. Many parents also send me photos of outfit ideas beforehand if they’d like a second opinion - I’m always happy to help.
When Baby Arrives: At-Home Newborn Photography
A few weeks after the park session, I joined them at home to meet their new baby. The boots and coats were swapped for blankets, knitwear, milky vests, and the warm rhythm of newborn days.
At-home newborn sessions are relaxed, unposed, and deeply personal. They happen in familiar rooms with familiar smells and textures - the cot, the sofa, the rocking chair, the blanket knitted by a grandparent.
For many families, this style of newborn photography feels calmer and more meaningful than travelling to a studio. I’ve written more about why here:
→ 5 Reasons Why an At-Home Newborn Photoshoot is the Perfect Choice
What to Expect From Your Newborn Session
A few simple things help set the tone:
• No tidying needed
I’ll find the best light and use small corners of your home. It doesn’t need to look perfect - it just needs to look like you.
• Go with the flow
Feeding, changing, burping, cuddling… we pause for whatever the baby needs.
• Dress simply
Soft knits, neutral tones, and cosy textures photograph beautifully and keep the focus on connection.
If you’re wondering about timing, I’ve written a breakdown that helps parents decide whether to book between 1–4 weeks or 5–8 weeks:
→ When Is the Best Time for a Newborn Photoshoot?
Some of my favourite images come from the smallest details: a kiss on a wrinkled forehead, tiny toes curled into a hand, or the tired smile you give when you think no one is watching.
Two Sessions, One Story
These sessions - one outdoors in nature, one indoors at home - bookend a powerful chapter. They document the shift from two to three; from waiting to welcoming; from “we’re having a baby” to “this is our baby.”
If you’re expecting and looking for maternity or newborn photography in London, I’d love to help you tell your story in a way that feels calm, natural, and true to you.
